How to Track Smart Money Wallets in Crypto

MoonRadar - updated October 2026
Short answer: Smart money wallets are wallets with a repeatable record of realised profit across many tokens. To track them, start from tokens that already moved, rank the wallets that traded them by realised profit, drop insiders, snipers and one-hit wallets, then watch their next buys and check each token before you follow.

Following good wallets is one of the few edges a small trader can copy. It's also one of the easiest ways to lose money, because most "smart money" lists are full of insiders, bots and wallets that got lucky once. The work is in the filtering.

What is smart money in crypto?

Smart money is a wallet that makes money on purpose, more than once. Not a wallet that turned $500 into $80,000 on one coin, but one that has closed a profit across dozens of tokens and keeps doing it.

On-chain, every buy and sell a wallet makes is public. That means you can rebuild any wallet's trading record from the chain itself, without trusting anyone's screenshots. Smart money tracking is just doing that at scale and keeping the wallets that hold up.

How do you find smart money wallets?

1. Start from tokens that already moved

Pick tokens that did a real run, then look at who traded them. A wallet that bought early and sold well on a winner is a candidate. A wallet that only shows up on tokens that died is not, however active it is. Finding coins before they move is a different job, covered in how to find new crypto coins early.

2. Rank by realised profit, not unrealised

Realised profit is what a wallet actually took out by selling. Unrealised profit is what its bag is worth on paper right now, at a price it may never be able to sell at.

A wallet holding 4% of a thin memecoin can show $200,000 unrealised, but selling that bag would crash the pool it's priced against. Rank on what was sold, and treat paper gains as a footnote.

3. Check the record across many tokens

One big win is a story. A record is a pattern. Before you trust a wallet, look at how many tokens it traded, how many it closed in profit (win rate), and whether the total comes from one coin or many.

The tell people miss: dollar rankings reward size, not skill. A whale that wins 30% of the time can top a profit table, while a wallet that wins 65% of the time with small size sits far below it. Check both the dollars and the win rate.

4. Filter out the fakes

Each of these has an on-chain test. Here is how to spot fake smart money wallet by wallet.

What does a good wallet look like versus a lucky one?

Take two made-up wallets from the same token's trader list.

Wallet A shows $42,000 realised profit. Its history is 3 tokens: one huge winner and two losers. It was funded the day before launch and bought in the first block.

Wallet B shows $9,000 realised profit. Its history is 40 tokens over three months, 24 closed in profit, entries a few minutes to a few hours after launch, nothing in the first block.

A tops the table. B is the wallet worth following: it wins without insider timing, at entries a human can actually reach. A is at best lucky and at worst connected to the team.

How do you follow a wallet once you've found it?

Track a short list, not a hundred wallets. A handful of wallets you've checked by hand beats a long list you never looked at, because every alert costs you a decision.

When a tracked wallet buys, check three things before you follow:

Why do people lose money copying smart money?

Because the wallet's edge was the timing, and you don't get their timing. You buy after them, at a higher price, and they can sell into the buyers who followed them, including you.

A few other ways it goes wrong: a wallet goes cold and nobody notices, a well-known wallet starts buying tokens to be followed and then sells into its own followers, or the follower sizes far bigger than the pool can handle. None of this means tracking is useless. It means a wallet's buy is a lead to check, not a signal to copy blind. The execution side, entry lag, slippage and when to sell, is in how to copy trade crypto safely.

How does MoonRadar track smart money?

MoonRadar ranks every wallet that traded a token by realised profit, across the tokens it traded recently, so you see the top traders of any coin. Paste a wallet and you get every token it traded, with per-token PnL and its overall record. The tiers rank dollars, not win rate, so check the win % before you copy.

You can track the wallets you pick and get alerted when they buy next. Copy trading runs on paper: it mirrors a wallet's buys and sells from live on-chain data from the moment you follow, so you see what riding it would return before any money is involved. That is the main difference from auto copy-trade bots, covered in MoonRadar vs GMGN. Top traders of coins MoonRadar watches on HOOD, BNB and ARC get queued for analysis automatically.

It's non-custodial, so any real trade is signed in your own wallet. Past profit is a record, not a promise, and most memecoins still fail.
