What Does Renounced Ownership Mean in Crypto?

MoonRadar - updated October 2026
Short answer: Renounced ownership means the token's owner gave up admin control, usually by setting the contract owner to the zero address. Functions locked to the owner can no longer be called, so taxes, limits and blacklists stay frozen. It does not stop proxy upgrades, other admin roles, liquidity pulls or a dev selling their bag.

"Contract renounced" is the most quoted safety line in memecoin Telegram groups. It's a real signal, and it's also the one that gets people the most false comfort. Here is what a renounce actually changes in the code, the gaps it leaves open, and how to check one yourself.

What happens when a contract owner renounces?

The owner calls a function, usually renounceOwnership(), that sets the stored owner to 0x0000000000000000000000000000000000000000. Nobody holds the key to that address, so every function guarded by an owner check is now uncallable forever. That's the whole mechanic.

On a typical token, owner-only functions are the dangerous ones: changing the buy and sell tax, setting max wallet or max transaction limits, adding wallets to a blacklist, pausing trading, excluding wallets from fees. After a clean renounce, all of those are frozen at whatever values they had at that moment.

The tell people miss: frozen cuts both ways. If the owner set a 30% sell tax and then renounced, that tax is now permanent. Read the current settings before you celebrate the renounce.

Is a renounced token safe?

No, it's safer on one axis. A renounce removes the risk that the owner changes the rules after you buy. It says nothing about the other ways a coin goes to zero, and some of them don't need any owner powers at all.

How can a contract look renounced but still be controlled?

These are the four gaps that show up most often. Each one passes a lazy "owner = zero address" check.

How do you check if a token is renounced?

On an EVM chain like BNB, open the token on the chain's block explorer and go to the Read Contract tab. Call owner(). A result of all zeros means renounced. Then check the transactions list for the renounceOwnership call and confirm it came from the deployer.

That only covers the first gap. To rule out the other three, the source needs to be verified on the explorer, because you can't audit what you can't read. Unverified source on a contract that claims to be renounced is a red flag on its own. With verified source, check for a proxy, search for other roles and any lock or unlock functions, and look at what the frozen tax and limit values actually are.

What is the renounced equivalent on Solana?

Standard Solana tokens don't have an owner function. The equivalents are authorities, and two matter most. The mint authority can create new tokens, so it should be revoked or anyone holding it can dilute you to nothing. The freeze authority can freeze your token account so you can't move or sell, which makes it a built-in honeypot switch. The other Solana checks, like Token-2022 extensions and bundled launches, are in the Solana token safety check.

If the token uses Token-2022 with a transfer fee, also check the transfer fee authority. While it's active, the fee can be changed later, the same risk as an active owner on an EVM tax token.

Should you ever buy a token where the owner is still active?

Sometimes, but price it as risk. Plenty of legitimate projects keep ownership because they need to adjust things after launch, and some lower the launch tax minutes after trading opens. An active owner isn't proof of a scam. It means you are trusting a person, not code.

The question is what that person can do. An owner who can only lower fees, with a hard cap in the code, is a small risk. An owner who can blacklist, pause, mint or set the sell tax to 99% can turn your position into a honeypot whenever they like.

How does MoonRadar check ownership?

Owner status is step 3 of the full pre-buy safety checklist, after the sell simulation and the tax. MoonRadar checks whether the owner can still edit the contract (renounced vs active) and puts that into the shield score alongside the sell simulation, buy and sell tax, liquidity (plus LP lock on coins it calls), and the deployer's rug history. It also marks a hidden owner or a renounce the owner can take back as not renounced.

Paste any token on HOOD, BNB, ARC or Solana into the scanner to see it before you trade. You sign every trade in your own wallet. A renounce only means the rules can't change, so treat it as one check, not a verdict.
